4th Year Medical Student Rotation

Clerkship Opportunities

We are often asked by third-year medical students how to go about setting up a fourth-year clinical rotation in Alaska. The answer is simple: contact the South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at (907) 212-6580. They are networked and in the know about clinical rotation opportunities around the state. The South Central AHEC coordinates our very own fourth-year clerkship rotation. The Alaska Family Medicine Residency offers a fourth-year clerkship in care of the underserved. This is an inpatient rotation on our family medicine service at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Fourth-year medical students serve as a member of the family medicine team, working alongside interns, inpatient chiefs and attendings. This is a great rotation in care of the underserved and not only gives you inpatient experience but also provides you with the opportunity for outpatient experiences at a local homeless shelter, flying with the medivac team and joining a rural practice for an up-close and personal look at frontline primary care medicine outside of Anchorage. This is a four-week, one student at a time rotation. Housing, transportation and some meals are provided. Applications are available now. Contact john.adamson@providence.org at the South Central Area Health Education Center to request a packet, or call (907) 212-6580.

Fourth-year students interested in rotation opportunities away from the Residency and outside of Anchorage should contact the South Central Area Health Education Center as well. They have connections to sites around the state and most rotations come with travel support, housing and meals.

We hope you will find the above information helpful and wish you the best as you make arrangements for your clinical rotations!
